Chapter Nineteen

The next day Jude spent most of it reciting the plan. He’d stop talking and wait for someone to take over to finish where he’d left off. He wanted it ingrained deeply in our minds. Jude wanted us to act as if we’d done it a million times.

Dane would carefully carry the box. Everyone was instructed to keep their distance but protect him at all costs. Without the explosives, we'd have no attack.

Before dawn, I’d depart to make my way inside. Jude folded his hands behind his back.

“And how will you get inside?” Jude asked as he slowly paced in front of me.

“There will be a hole in the fence. I know where it is,” I answered matching his confident tone. “My friend put it there.”

“She’ll get as many as she can to the beach. The second the sun touches the horizon, that’s when we make our move. Dane will blow a hole in the fence near the gate,” he went on, everyone nodding along.

I had a sinking feeling that hit me in the pit of my stomach. What if no one would listen to me? What if they wouldn’t come?

Nate would listen. He had to. It wasn’t like he’d suddenly be converted into a Benjamin follower, but what if he wanted something more convincing than my words?

I could feel the perspiration beading up near my temples. It would be OK. I was worrying about nothing. If no one listened, I would just have to go to the water’s edge myself.

I walked away from the group to the back of the tree house. My hands were shaking as I crossed my arms hoping to hide my nerves.

I looked out the window and saw the flashes of lightning in the distance. The flashes lit the entire sky, but they were so far away I couldn’t even hear the thunder that likely followed.

The wind wasn’t blowing, and it wasn’t raining, but that didn’t mean a storm wasn’t on the way. All I could do is hope it didn’t come our way because if it did, Jude might delay things another night. We didn’t have time to delay. Not again.

“Storm again?” Dane said in my ear. My body jolted backward a step. “Oh shit, sorry.”

“You startled me,” I said, pressing my hand against my heart.

“I gathered that.”

I bit my lip. “Sorry. I guess I'm a bit jumpy.”

“Because of what we’re going to do?”

“What? Oh, no. I’m ready to do that now.” I said pushing my shoulders back. “Jumpy because of what happened the other day. With Luke.”

Dane nodded. “Right. Your friend that injected me with some kind of,” Dane curled air quotes with his fingers, “medicine.”

“I’m not sure about a friend, he’s more of an acquaintance,” I said, and Dane chuckled. “Sorry about that by the way.”

“Why would you be sorry?”

“My acquaintances shouldn’t go around injecting my friends.”

Dane laughed, and I couldn’t help but smile. He had an infectious laugh and a smile that made me smile back.

“You know…,” Dane stepped next to me, so our shoulders were touching.
